Kenya’s Deputy President William Ruto goes on\r\ntrial at the International Criminal Court (ICC) on Tuesday 10th\r\nSeptember, 2013 on charges of involvement in violence that left about 1,300\r\npeople dead. Also going on trial Tuesday is former radio host Joshua Arap Sang,\r\nwho is also accused of involvement in the deadly violence.

\r\nThe ICC accuses Ruto and President Uhuru\r\nKenyatta of human rights abuses through involvement in Kenya’s 2007-2008\r\npost-election violence that left about 1,300 dead and hundreds of thousands\r\ndisplaced from their homes.

\r\nICC spokesman Fadi El-Abdallah said the court would\r\nrespect both His Excellency President Kenyatta and the Vice President Ruto\r\namidst demands by some Kenyan lawmakers that the two leaders are accorded\r\nspecial treatment because of the high office they hold.  He further went on to add that Mr. Ruto, Mr. Sang and\r\nPresident Kenyatta are free persons who would be appearing before the\r\nHague-based court on a voluntary basis. He said the court had not issued arrest\r\nwarrants against them.
\r\n
\r\nPreviously, the ICC ruled that prosecutor Fatou\r\nBensouda can add two additional witnesses to her list in the case against\r\nDeputy President Ruto. This came after two witnesses withdrew from testifying\r\nbefore the court citing family issues, safety and security concerns.
